Battery Operated Orchestra, the Sussex-based duo of Brigitte Rose and Chris Black, bring their synth-pop mastercraft to GOTO with ‘’We Are Ghosts’’, a 17-track retrospective of a decade’s worth of work. BOO’s well- refined DIY operations are evident across every facet of their musical process – these songs aren’t throwbacks to the halcyon days of the new wave, but perfectly constructed modern pop songs. Unforgettable, distinct and chic. Whilst conjuring lyrical allusions to espionage, electricity and EVP, Rose’s vocals can be reminiscent of anyone from Clare Grogan to Charlotte Gainsbourg, all backed up by an irresistible ensemble of synthesizers and drum machines, harmonious and sonically enticing.

"We Are Ghosts’’ presents material from BOO’s four
albums – ‘’Incomplete Until Broken’’ [2013], ‘’Radiation’’ [2016], ‘’Snare’’ [2018], ‘’Yesterday, Tomorrow and You’’ [2020] – as well as tracks found elsewhere on a slew of singles and EPs. The result is a perfect demonstration of BOO’s knack to get the listener moving yet never falling into the predictable. Meanwhile, BOO continue to look to the future, readying a fifth album for release later in 2023.

Found KATSEN when looking into electronica\lowfi while working on my own. I quite loved what I'd heard, but unfortunately not in time to catch any physical material. Tried on Bandcamp, and lo! there's Katsen! Love this kind of music, slightly reminiscent of Men WIthout Hats and Simple Minds' REEL TO REEL CACOPHONY/EMPIRES AND DANCE era to me. This is a great collection, and glad to find Play For Today and others as bonus tracks! This is great. Kevin Noel Olson
